The shift nobody is naming: you’re not marketing to people first anymore
Look at those headlines and a pattern jumps out: ChatGPT Shopping, AI misinformation experiments, “Are they all SEO?”, AI agents, LLMs to humanize content, custom GPTs, “algorithmic education.”
The industry is still talking like this is about “SEO” or “automation.” It isn’t.
The real shift: your marketing is increasingly consumed, filtered, summarized, and ranked by models before it ever reaches a human.
You’re no longer just marketing to people via algorithms (feeds, auctions, SERPs). You’re marketing to models that then market you to people.
That’s a different game. And most performance teams are still playing the old one.
From SEO to MEO: Model Engine Optimization
Traditional SEO was about search engines: crawl, index, rank. You optimized pages for bots that showed blue links to humans.
Now we’re in the early stage of what I’ll call MEO: Model Engine Optimization. You’re optimizing your brand and offers for:
- LLMs (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity)
- Agent systems (shopping assistants, research agents, planning bots)
- Platform-native models (Meta’s Advantage+, Google’s PMax, TikTok’s recommendation engine)
These models don’t just rank links. They:
- Summarize you
- Rewrite your messaging
- Compare you to competitors
- Decide if you’re credible enough to recommend at all
If you’re a performance marketer, this matters more than another “2026 social trends” deck. Because it changes:
- How you structure campaigns
- How you brief creatives
- How you think about brand vs performance
- How you measure and attribute
Three model layers you need to care about
1. Discovery models: “Who should see this?”
These are the familiar ones: Meta, Google, TikTok, programmatic. But they’ve shifted from rule-based to model-based:
- Advantage+ and PMax deciding placements, bids, and creative mixes
- “Learning periods” where the model figures out who converts
- Feed algorithms deciding whether your organic content gets any reach at all
You already know the tactical advice: broader audiences, more signals, fewer constraints. But the mental model needs to change:
You’re not “targeting” people. You’re training a model on what a good customer looks like.
2. Interpretation models: “What is this?”
These are the LLMs and agents reading your site, your product pages, your docs, your reviews, your social content. They:
- Decide what your brand “is about” in a sentence
- Choose which features to highlight when users ask questions
- Summarize your pricing, positioning, and proof
- Compare you against alternatives
This is where “ChatGPT Shopping” and “AI misinformation experiments” live. If the model misreads you, you lose the recommendation before the click ever exists.
3. Decision models: “Should this person buy from you?”
These are the agents that will:
- Pick the “best” product for a user’s constraints
- Negotiate between price, quality, and brand trust
- Auto-fill carts, subscriptions, and renewals
Think: “Find me the best running shoes under $150 that ship to me by Friday and are good for flat feet.” That’s not a keyword; that’s a brief to a purchasing agent.
If your brand doesn’t exist in the model’s world in a structured, understandable way, you’re invisible in that decision.
What this means for performance teams in practice
1. Treat every campaign as model training, not just media buying
The “learning period” isn’t a box to get through; it’s the core of your job now.
Practical moves:
- Stop obsessing over micro-targeting. Give models broad audiences and let them find pockets of performance. Your job is to feed them clean, consistent conversion signals.
- Fix your event hygiene. Dedupe events, kill junk conversions, and make sure your primary conversion actually maps to business value. Bad events = bad training data.
- Consolidate where it helps the model. Fewer campaigns and ad sets with clearer objectives usually beat a Frankenstein account structure built for 2018.
2. Make your site “model-readable,” not just “SEO-friendly”
Traditional SEO talks about crawlability and keywords. Model readability is about clarity and consistency of meaning.
On-page, this means:
- Plain-language positioning above the fold. If an LLM had to summarize you in one sentence, what would it say? Put that sentence (or close to it) in your H1 and intro copy.
- Structured descriptions of who you’re for and what you do. Think bullet lists, FAQs, comparison tables. Models love structure.
- Consistent naming. Don’t call the same thing “Pro Plan,” “Growth Tier,” and “Scale Package” in different places. That’s how you get mis-summarized.
Off-page, this means:
- Aligned third-party descriptions. Directories, review sites, partner pages, and your own socials should describe you in roughly the same way. LLMs cross-reference.
- Clear topical focus. If your blog is a random mix of topics, models struggle to understand your authority. Pick lanes and stay in them.
3. Design for summarization, not just persuasion
A lot of your copy will never be read by a human. It will be read by a model that then tells a human what you said.
So write like this:
- Lead with the answer. “We help X do Y so they can Z.” Then support it. Don’t bury the value prop in paragraph four.
- Use explicit labels. “Who it’s for,” “What you get,” “Pricing,” “Limitations,” “Alternatives.” These are easy for models to map to user questions.
- Be honest about tradeoffs. Overhyped, vague claims are exactly what misinformation-focused models will down-rank over time.
If you want to test this: paste your homepage into an LLM and ask, “Summarize this company in one sentence,” and “Who should not use this product?” If the answers are wrong, your copy is noise.
4. Build “model-facing” assets on purpose
Everyone is building “ChatGPT SEO tools” and “best of” lists to game AI visibility. Most of that will decay fast. But there is a durable play here:
- Authoritative explainers in your category. Not fluff blogs. Clear, technically accurate guides that models will quote when users ask “how does X work?”
- Comparison pages that are actually fair. If you write “Us vs Competitor” pages that are obviously biased, models will discount them. If you write honest comparisons, they’ll often be used as source material.
- Structured product data. Specs, constraints, compatible use cases. Agents need parameters to optimize against.
5. Stop fighting automation; instrument it
“Beyond rigid automation” and “custom GPTs” aren’t just productivity hacks. They’re how you build a feedback loop with the models that already gate your performance.
Practical moves:
- Use LLMs to audit your own presence. Ask multiple models: “If I want [your category] and care about [your main differentiator], who should I pick?” Track how often you’re named.
- Build internal GPTs/agents that think like your platforms. For example, a “Meta Media Planner” GPT that forces planners to define signals, creative variety, and learning phases clearly.
- Automate the boring, not the thinking. Use agents for reporting, QA, and content scaffolding. Keep humans on strategy, positioning, and offer design.
Brand vs performance in a model-first world
The old argument: “Brand is long-term, performance is short-term.” In a model-first world, that split gets blurry.
Models care about:
- Consistency of message across channels (brand)
- Reliable behavioral signals (performance)
- Evidence of trust: reviews, mentions, citations (brand)
- Observed conversion quality: LTV, churn, refunds (performance)
If your “performance” work ignores brand, models see a noisy, inconsistent entity with shallow proof. If your “brand” work ignores performance, models see vibes with no outcomes.
For operators, the useful way to think about it:
- Brand is how models describe you. Positioning, narrative, proof, consistency.
- Performance is how models observe you. Conversion events, retention, engagement, satisfaction.
You need both if you want to be the default recommendation in your category.
What to actually do in the next 90 days
If you run growth, media, or performance, here’s a concrete 90-day roadmap to start marketing to models on purpose.
Step 1: Run a “model perception” audit
- Ask 3-4 LLMs: “What does [Brand] do?” and “Who is it best for?”
- Ask: “What are the best options for [your category]?” and see if you appear.
- Paste your top landing pages and ask for one-sentence summaries and “who should not use this.”
- Document misalignments with how you actually want to be seen.
Step 2: Fix your signal quality
- Audit all conversion events across platforms; remove junk and duplicates.
- Define one primary conversion that matches real business value for each objective.
- Clean up your account structure to give models enough data per campaign/ad set.
- Set a minimum spend and time window for learning and stick to it.
Step 3: Rewrite for clarity and structure
- Update your homepage and key landers with clear, plain-language positioning.
- Add structured sections: “Who it’s for,” “Who it’s not for,” “Key features,” “Proof.”
- Standardize naming across site, ads, emails, and social bios.
- Create or update at least one honest comparison or “how it works” page.
Step 4: Add one model-facing growth experiment
- Test a “ChatGPT-ready” FAQ or guide in your category and track organic assist (via brand search, direct, and “mentioned by” checks).
- Experiment with an internal GPT for media planning or creative QA.
- Run a small test where creative is explicitly written to be easily summarized (clear headers, bullets, explicit benefits) and compare performance.
The teams who win the next few years won’t be the ones with the fanciest AI deck. They’ll be the ones who quietly accept the new reality:
