Look at those headlines and a pattern jumps out: AI Overviews, AI Mode, LLM SEO, entity-based SEO, “fresh content” for AI visibility, AI search strategy, AI consumer trends.
Underneath the noise is one high-signal reality for performance marketers:
The unit of competition is no longer the search result. It’s the answer.
Google, OpenAI, Perplexity, Meta, TikTok, Reddit search – they’re all converging on the same thing: answer engines that summarize, synthesize, and increasingly transact on your behalf.
If you’re still thinking in “rankings” and “placements” only, you’re missing where performance is about to move. The question is no longer “How do I rank?” but “How do I get named in the answer, and how do I get the click or the action from that answer?”
What AI answers are actually doing to your funnel
Three things are quietly happening at once:
- Top-of-funnel is being compressed. AI Overviews and chat answers collapse 10 blue links into one synthesized response. Fewer exploratory clicks. More “one and done” queries.
- Mid-funnel research is being outsourced. “Best tools for…”, “compare X vs Y”, “which platform should I use for…” – the messy comparison work is moving into AI chat.
- Brand discovery is fragmenting. Reddit, TikTok, and niche communities are feeding AI models. Your “SEO strategy” is now partly “what does Reddit think of us?”
In other words, AI is:
- Deciding which brands are even in the consideration set.
- Summarizing your value prop for you (accurately or not).
- Stealing impressions from both SEO and PPC – and sometimes handing them back in a different format.

Old mental model: “What’s my share of voice on page 1 for these keywords?”
New mental model: “When someone asks an AI about my category, how often am I:
- Included in the answer?
- Positioned as a top option?
- Linked as the next action (click, trial, purchase)?
Call this answer share.
You can’t pull it from a standard dashboard yet, but you can approximate it with a simple, operator-friendly process.
Step 1: Build an “AI intent map” instead of a keyword list
Take your usual keyword universe and rewrite it as questions a human would ask an AI assistant:
- “What’s the best [category] for [segment] with [constraint]?”
- “Which is better: [you] or [competitor] for [use case]?”
- “Cheapest way to [job to be done] for a small team?”
- “How do I [solve painful problem] without [undesired tradeoff]?”
Do this for:
- Problem-aware queries (“how to reduce CAC on paid social”)
- Solution-aware queries (“best creative testing tools”)
- Brand-aware queries (“[your brand] vs [competitor]”)
Step 2: Test those intents across AI surfaces
Run those questions through:
- Google Search with AI Overviews (where available)
- ChatGPT / Claude / Perplexity (depending on your market)
- Reddit search and TikTok search (to see what’s feeding the models)
For each query, log:
- Are you mentioned at all?
- How you’re described (positioning, price, use case).
- Which brands are consistently mentioned ahead of you.
- Which URLs are being cited in the AI answer.
That spreadsheet is your first rough answer share audit.
What AI answer engines actually reward (right now)
Ignore the hype. Under the hood, the systems pulling citations into AI answers still care about a few boring, controllable things:
1. Entities and clarity over keyword stuffing
Entity-based SEO is not a buzzword here; it’s table stakes. Models are trying to understand:
- What exactly are you? (category, subcategory, use cases)
- Who are you for? (segments, industries, company sizes)
- Where do you fit in the ecosystem? (integrations, competitors, alternatives)
Practically, that means:
- Clean, explicit product and category pages that say “We are a [category] for [segment] that helps with [jobs to be done].”
- Comparison pages that clearly lay out “[Brand] vs [Competitor] for [use case].”
- FAQ and docs that answer “Does [brand] work with [tool]?” and “Can I use [brand] for [specific scenario]?”
2. Freshness that’s actually visible
AI systems are biased toward “current” information, and several SEO studies are now showing:
- Visible, accurate publish and update dates boost inclusion in AI answers.
- Stale content gets skipped, even if it still ranks organically.
For performance teams, the move is:
- Identify your top money pages that answer commercial questions.
- Refresh them on a real cadence (quarterly is fine, yearly is too slow in many categories).
- Make the update date explicit and honest.
3. Clear, scannable structure
Models like content that looks like an answer:
- Direct question in the heading.
- Short, clear answer up top.
- Then detail, tables, and comparisons.
If your content reads like a meandering blog post instead of a crisp answer, you’re making it harder for AI to quote you.
4. Real-world signals from humans
LLMs are trained and tuned on what people actually say and share. That means:
- Reddit threads, Quora answers, and forum posts mentioning your brand.
- Social content where creators compare tools and show workflows.
- G2/Capterra and similar reviews that describe use cases in natural language.
These aren’t just “social proof” anymore; they’re training data and relevance signals.
How to adapt your media and growth strategy to answer engines
This isn’t a “throw out your playbook” moment. It’s a reallocation moment. You keep the core, but you point it at answers instead of only at rankings and placements.
1. Reframe SEO work as “answer engineering”
Instead of publishing 50 thin posts a quarter, do this:
- Take your AI intent map and pick the 20-30 highest-value questions.
- For each, create a single canonical “answer page”:
- H1 is the question, verbatim.
- First 2-3 sentences: a direct, non-fluffy answer.
- Then: pros/cons, comparisons, pricing ranges, use-case nuance.
- Mark up with schema where it makes sense (FAQ, product, review).
The goal: if an AI assistant scrapes one page to answer that question, it should be yours.

- Competitor + high intent (“[competitor] alternatives”, “cancel [competitor]”)
- Category + urgency (“[category] for launch this month”, “fastest way to…”)
Tactically:
- Expect volume softness on generic, top-of-funnel terms as AI answers get more prominent.
- Shift budget into:
- Brand defense (because AI answers may still push users to search your name directly).
- Competitor conquesting with strong, specific offers.
- Retargeting and CRM-driven audiences where intent is already known.
- Test ad copy that explicitly references the comparison journey:
- “Comparing [you] vs [competitor]? See real pricing and feature gaps.”
- “Already tried [competitor]? Here’s what switches tell us.”
3. Treat “AI employees” as media channels, not magic
Everyone is talking about “AI employees” and automation. For media and growth, the useful framing is:
- AI for pattern detection: spotting where answer engines mention you or ignore you.
- AI for drafting: first-pass content that humans then sharpen for accuracy and differentiation.
- AI for simulation: asking “as a buyer, what would you ask before choosing [category]?” to expand your intent map.
What it’s not:
- A replacement for real positioning work.
- A safe autopilot for messaging in a trust-sensitive environment.
In a world where AI systems summarize your brand, outsourcing your message entirely to AI is handing the keys to a drunk copywriter with amnesia.
4. Build “answer-ready” creative, not just ad-ready creative
Creative that performs in an answer-first world:
- States the category and use case clearly in the first 2-3 seconds or first line.
- Shows the outcome and the tradeoffs (“fewer steps, but you’ll pay more per seat”).
- Is easy for humans to describe and quote (“It’s basically [X] but for [Y].”).
That last point matters: if your product is hard to explain, AI will explain it badly. Your job is to give both humans and models a simple, repeatable story.
What to measure while the tools catch up
You won’t get a neat “AI answer share” metric from your analytics stack this quarter. But you can track leading indicators that matter.
1. Branded search and “brand + comparison” volume
If AI is doing its job, more people should:
- Search your brand name directly after generic queries.
- Search “[your brand] vs [competitor]” or “[your brand] reviews”.
Watch:
- Growth in branded impressions and clicks over time.
- Growth in “vs” and “alternative to” queries that include you.
2. Inclusion rate in AI answers (manual but powerful)
For your AI intent map:
- Sample your top 50-100 commercial questions monthly.
- Score each as:
- 0 = not mentioned
- 1 = mentioned but not recommended
- 2 = mentioned as a top or primary option
- Track your average score over time.
It’s crude, but it will show whether your work is moving you into more answers.
3. Conversion quality from AI-exposed surfaces
As AI answers expand, you may see:
- Lower top-of-funnel volume but higher intent on what remains.
- More “direct” and “referral” traffic from odd sources as users click through citations.
Segment performance by:
- Landing pages that are frequently cited in AI answers (you’ll know from your audit).
- Visitors who land on comparison and “best tools for X” pages.
If those cohorts convert better, that’s a sign your answer strategy is working, even if you can’t see the full AI path.
The operator’s edge: be quotable, be comparable, be current
AI answer engines don’t care how many blog posts you published last year. They care whether they can:
- Understand exactly what you do and for whom.
- Confidently drop your name into a recommendation.
- Point to a page that looks like a clean, current answer.
For performance marketers and media buyers, the play is not to chase every new AI feature. It’s to quietly reshape your existing channels around one question:
If an AI assistant had to explain us in one paragraph and one link, what would we want that to be?
Then go build that paragraph and that link, everywhere that matters.
