They’re labeled with phrases like: “Summarize with AI,” “Save this recipe to ChatGPT,” “Remember this site,” or “Ask AI about this recipe.” Plugins from Feast, Hubbub, Shareaholic, and others have made adding these buttons straightforward, and hundreds of bloggers are now testing them out. As usage has increased, however, so has criticism. Microsoft recently released research highlighting a risk it calls AI recommendation poisoning, and some SEOs now argue these buttons might be interpreted as a kind of prompt injection or AI manipulation. There’s also concern that they nudge visitors to leave the site and not come back. So which is it? Are AI buttons a smart UX enhancement that helps you adjust to AI-first discovery, or a dangerous SEO tactic that could hurt you? As with most SEO questions, the real answer is: “It depends.”
What AI buttons actually are (and what they aren’t)
Before diving into the controversy, it helps to be clear about what AI buttons actually do. Fundamentally, AI buttons are UX shortcuts that let a reader quickly:

- Save the page for later inside their AI’s long-term or persistent memory.

- Link or associate a site with a topic inside their personal AI assistant.
