Look at those headlines and a pattern jumps out: AI Overviews, AI Mode, “AI search strategy,” entity-based SEO, fresh content dates, localized SEO for LLMs, AI marketing examples that actually worked.
Underneath all of it is one big shift that actually matters to performance marketers and media buyers:
We’re moving from optimizing for search results to optimizing for AI answers.
Google’s blue “Send” button, AI Overviews, ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Meta AI in feeds, TikTok search, Reddit’s rise via algorithms – they all point to the same thing: your customer increasingly gets one synthesized answer, not a list of 10 blue links and 3 ads.
That breaks a lot of the mental models we’ve used for a decade:
- “Rank on page 1” is less important than “be included in the answer.”
- “Bid on the keyword” becomes “be the brand the model trusts to cite.”
- “Write more content” becomes “own entities and facts that models reuse.”
The operators who treat this as a UX curiosity will lose share. The ones who treat it as a new performance channel – with its own mechanics and constraints – will quietly siphon demand.
What AI answer engines actually optimize for
Forget the hype and look at behavior. AI answer engines (Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, etc.) are trying to do three things:
- Be fast. They prefer sources that are easy to crawl, parse, and summarize.
- Be safe. They prefer sources that look authoritative, consistent, and low-risk.
- Be current. They prefer content with clear timestamps and freshness signals.
That lines up with the current content discourse:

In practice, this means:

That’s the new optimization game: make your brand the easiest, safest, most structured answer source in your category.
The new funnel: from query to answer to click
In a classic search world, your funnel looked like:
- User types query.
- Sees 10 organic links + 3-4 ads.
- Clicks a result or ad.
- Lands on your page, converts (or doesn’t).
In an AI answer world, it looks more like:
- User asks a question (typed, spoken, or inside a chat).
- AI synthesizes an answer, citing a handful of sources.
- User may:
- Accept the answer and do nothing.
- Click one of the cited sources.
- Ask a follow-up question inside the AI interface.
Notice what changed:
- Discovery and evaluation are collapsing into one step.
- Your “snippet” is now the whole buying guide.
- The AI interface, not the browser tab, is the default environment.
For performance marketers, that means:
- Impression share is now “answer share.”
- Click-through is now “answer-to-click rate.”
- Attribution is now “what did the model say before they ever saw us?”
From SEO to AEO: Answer Engine Optimization
You don’t need a new acronym on your slide, but you do need a new checklist.
1. Make your brand an entity, not just a website
LLMs think in entities and relationships, not just pages and links. You want your brand, products, and key attributes to be:
- Machine-readable.
- Consistent across the web.
- Connected to the right concepts.
Practical moves:
- Structured data everywhere. Use schema (Product, Organization, FAQ, HowTo, LocalBusiness) on core pages. Models eat this.
- Canonical naming. Use one consistent name for your brand and products across site, socials, marketplaces, and directories.
- Claim your graph real estate. Keep Google Business Profile, Wikipedia (if relevant), Crunchbase, LinkedIn, and key directories aligned and up to date.
- Answer “who/what are you” clearly. Have a simple, unambiguous description of your brand and products that repeats across surfaces.
2. Design content for summarization, not just ranking
AI answer engines don’t read your page like a human. They chunk, summarize, and recombine. You want to be the easiest page to summarize accurately.
Practical moves:
- Use atomic answers. Short, self-contained paragraphs that clearly answer specific questions: “What is X?”, “How does X compare to Y?”, “Who is X for?”
- Use question-based subheadings. H2/H3 that mirror real queries and conversational prompts: “Is safe for…?”, “What’s the difference between…?”
- Minimize fluff. Long intros and story arcs confuse models. Put the answer in the first 2-3 sentences, then expand.
- Use clean tables and bullets. Comparison tables, pros/cons lists, and step-by-step bullets are highly “summarizable.”
3. Treat freshness as a performance lever, not a hygiene task
The “fresh content” conversation is no longer about gaming the date stamp. Models and AI Overviews visibly favor:
- Pages with clear, recent publish or update dates.
- Content that references current-year data, pricing, or examples.
- Sites that show a pattern of ongoing updates, not one-off bursts.
Practical moves:
- Set an update cadence for your top 50-100 money pages. Quarterly or biannual refreshes with real changes: data, screenshots, pricing, FAQs.
- Expose dates clearly. Don’t hide publish/update dates; make them explicit and accurate.
- Use “last updated” sections. A short note at the top summarizing what changed and when gives both users and models a freshness signal.
4. Reduce contradictions and cannibalization
LLMs hate ambiguity. If your own site disagrees with itself, you become a risky source.
Think of the Moz “cannibalization” problem, multiplied: multiple pages targeting the same topic with slightly different claims, prices, or specs.
Practical moves:
- Consolidate overlapping pages. Merge near-duplicate content into stronger, canonical resources with clear redirects.
- Standardize claims and numbers. Pricing, guarantees, performance stats, and feature lists should match across pages and PDFs.
- Use canonical URLs aggressively. Help crawlers and models understand the “one true” page for a topic.
Media buying in an AI-first discovery world
This isn’t just an SEO problem. It changes how you think about paid, too – especially your SEO/PPC budget mix and how you brief creative.
1. Rethink your SEO vs PPC budget mix
As AI answers absorb more top-of-funnel queries, you’ll see:
- Lower impression counts for some generic search terms.
- Higher intent concentration on the remaining clicks.
- Weirder attribution paths as users bounce between AI chat, social, and branded search.
Instead of “what’s the right SEO/PPC split,” ask:
- Which queries are now mostly answered inside AI? These may be better served by content and entity work than by more bids.
- Which queries still show strong commercial intent and click-through? Double down on these with tighter paid coverage.
- Where can we use paid to reinforce what the AI already says? If AI Overviews frequently mention you, protect those terms with branded and competitor-adjacent campaigns.
2. Treat creative as training data
Your ads, landing pages, and social content are now part of the training soup. Over time, they influence how models describe you.
That means your creative should:
- Use consistent positioning language. The way you describe your category, your differentiator, and your audience should be boringly repetitive across channels.
- Answer category-level questions. Don’t just scream offers; explain “how to choose,” “who this is for,” “what to compare.” Those explanations get reused by models.
- Avoid overclaiming. Wild, contradictory claims across ads and pages make you look noisy and unreliable to both humans and machines.
3. Build “answer assets,” not just landing pages
Most performance teams build:
- Feature pages.
- Offer pages.
- Retargeting pages.
In an AI-first world, you also need:
- Best-in-class comparison pages. Honest, structured comparisons (including competitors) that models can safely cite.
- Decision guides. “Which X is right for you?” pages with clear segmenting logic and trade-offs.
- Policy and trust pages. Clear, detailed pages on privacy, data, compliance, and guarantees that reduce perceived risk.
These don’t always crush in last-click attribution, but they show up in AI answers and shape the pre-click narrative.
Measurement: how to know if you’re winning
The worst part of AI answer optimization is that the reporting is terrible. You won’t get a neat “AI answer share” column in Google Ads anytime soon.
But you can still instrument the shift.
1. Track “mentioned by AI” share manually (for now)
Build a simple recurring process:
- List 20-50 high-value queries (problems, comparisons, “best X for Y”).
- Monthly, run them through:
- Google (with AI Overviews).
- ChatGPT / Perplexity / other relevant AI search tools.
- Log:
- Whether you’re mentioned.
- How you’re described.
- Which competitors appear.
You now have a crude but useful “answer share” and “positioning in the model’s mind” tracker.
2. Watch branded search and direct traffic as lagging indicators
As AI answers mention you more, you should see:
- More branded queries that include category language (“[brand] pricing,” “[brand] vs [competitor]”).
- More direct traffic with “unknown” or “referral” origins, especially on decision and comparison pages.
Don’t overfit, but if these trend up while your AI answer presence improves, you’re on the right track.
3. Update your attribution questions
When you run post-purchase or lead surveys, add:
- “Did you use an AI assistant (ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, etc.) while researching this purchase?”
- “If yes, what did you ask it?”
This won’t give you a neat ROAS number, but it will tell you how real the AI discovery path is in your category, and what questions you need to be the answer to.
What to do in the next 90 days
If you’re running growth, media, or performance, here’s a realistic 90-day plan:

- Pick 30-50 queries across awareness, consideration, and decision.
- Check AI Overviews and at least one AI search/chat tool.
- Log where you appear, how you’re described, and who else shows up.

Fix your entities and contradictions.
- Standardize your brand and product naming across web, socials, and directories.
- Consolidate 5-10 obvious cannibalized or conflicting pages.
- Add or fix structured data on your top revenue-driving pages.

Ship three “answer assets.”
- One honest comparison page (including competitors).
- One decision guide (“which X is right for you?”).
- One updated, detailed trust/policy page.

- Clear H2/H3 questions.

You don’t control the interface anymore. But you can absolutely influence what the interface says when your buyer asks, “What should I buy?” or “Which tool is best for…?”
That’s the new performance battleground. Not the SERP. The answer.
