GenAI people can be very prickly about criticaKohler is now training AI on pictures of what you leave behind in the toilet. Its new smart toilet camera, the Dekoda, attaches to the bowl, snaps photos of what goes into it, and uses those images to assess your gut health (subscription required, of course). Naturally, the company anticipated privacy concerns and claimed all data is protected with “end-to-end encryption.” Except it’s not.
As security researcher Simon Fondrie-Teitler pointed out, Kohler is actually referring to basic TLS encryption — the kind used to secure data in transit on HTTPS websites — not actual end-to-end encryption, where only the sender and recipient can access the data. Kohler’s privacy policy confirms that data is decrypted once it reaches the company’s systems, meaning Kohler can view and potentially use the images for training its algorithms. When asked, a company rep assured the researcher that training is done only on “de-identified data.” Well, that takes a load off my mind.
