Culture is never something you can completely engineer in advance. You can outline values, write down principles, and describe desired behaviors, but the real culture emerges over time through people, decisions, and the tough moments. At Databox, one word has followed us for years and has captured this better than anything else: playmakers. A playmaker isn’t just a high performer. A playmaker creates chances for others to succeed, too. In our early days, one of our marketing leaders, John Bonini, used this term to describe who we are. At the time, we didn’t fully grasp how fitting it was. As the years passed and we refined our core values, our ways of working, and what we expect from one another, “Playmakers” gradually became a shortcut for everything we stand for. Last quarter, we revisited and updated our values again. Aljaž Godec, our Head of People and Culture, helped refine them so they better reflect who we are now and where we’re headed next. I want to explain why this idea of playmakers resonates so strongly with me and why it’s so important for how we’ll preserve and evolve our culture going forward.
